In last weeks piece about “Kid Friendly New Orleans” it was suggested you keep an eye out for youth programs offered by the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra. The coming months have several opportunities to take advantage of New Orleans own world class orchestra.
The LPO has three different programs geared toward three different age groups. Early Explorers for the pre-K to 1st grade set, Young People’s Concerts for 2nd to 8th graders, and Open Rehearsals for High School’ers. The are all open to individuals as well as groups.
The Young People’s Concerts in New Orleans will take place on Friday morning, January 17, and Wednesday January 29 at the Mahalia Jackson Theater of Performing Arts. The program is sure to grab the kids attention right away as it kicks off with Rebirth Brass Band‘s “Do What You Wanna” – a Mardi Gras anthem.
At the end of next month, the LPO presents their “Early Explorers” program at First Baptist Church. There are eight opportunities to participate in this program, which “explores the shapes of the orchestra; [and] includes interactive “Meet-the-Musician” stations, musician ensembles and a 25-minute concert with the full orchestra!!”
Several open rehearsals are happening as well. At these morning events, both the conductor and guest artist talk with the audience about the music and the preparation for the concert prior to the rehearsal itself. Over the next month you can see the Chinese New Year concert, Bolero and the Appalachian Spring event.
As a special mention, this weekend on both Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon is Cirque de la Symphonie. A touring program where the artistry of cirque acts is combined with the live orchestra. Besides the cirque artists, the kid friendly aspect of this program is that they are offering $10.00 kids tickets (through the LPO office only). Hurry down because tickets are going fast.
See you out and about with the kids.
Every thing lovely,
